A tea party for Mrs. Claus

Our water table has been transformed into a tea party for Mrs. Claus! The children are able to measure; pour; sort and count while they create 'yummy' peppermint tea or cocoa for the guests at the tea party.

December at the Science Table

The children are viewing a variety of items at the Science table this month. We are using magnifying lenses to view pine boughs; pine needles; pine cones and a section from a pine stump.

Santa's workshop

This week the house centre has been transformed into Santa's workshop. The children can play in the role of elves or reindeer. There are costumes to wear (tool belts or antlers) and tools to use. The children are busy fixing up toys and writing letters to other kids. Ho! Ho! Ho!

The Three Bears Cottage

During the month of November we have read many different versions of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We have been using this tale to help us become better at re-telling stories. Good readers are able to re-tell stories: stating the important events, the characters, and the setting. The children have enjoyed re-telling this favourite story by visiting our house centre.

We're Going On a Bear Hunt!

This week we will be exploring the picture book, We're Going on a Bear Hunt. We will be reading it several times; re-telling it; creating music to accompany it; and creating drama to re-tell it.

Sparky comes to visit!

Thank you to Fireman Doug and Sparky who came to visit last Thursday. They taught us about the difference between tools and toys; the importance of having a fire safety plan and how to stop, drop and roll.

The Great Pumpkin Patch!

Last Wednesday we visited the Great Pumpkin Patch at Bry-Anne Farms. We had a wonderful time at the farm, despite the wet and cold weather. Thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers who helped us make this trip possible.

Trick or Treating!

Happy Halloween from Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. Overholt and Mrs. Johnson!

Pumpkin Patch Read Alouds

This week we will be reading books about pumpkins; life-cycles of pumpkins; and pumpkin patches.

Turkey Soup Math

Our sensory table has changed for the month of October. The children are busy 'cooking' at the sensory table. We have foam pieces of onion, celery, mushrooms, carrot and turkey; water; a turkey baster; measuring spoons; and serving dishes. The children are able to create a delicious turkey soup while counting, sorting and measuring. Math fun!

Gobble! Gobble!

Please help our Kinder turkey! We are trying to get our turkey ready in time for Thanksgiving. Please help 'dress' our turkey by sending in your special feather. Happy Thanksgiving!

To market, to market!

This week our Dramatic play centre is changing! During the month of September the children explored role playing in the familiar setting of a home. They were able to play house while exploring the familiar roles of mummy, daddy, brother, sister, etc. The props consisted of typical things that would be found in a home: kitchen, washer, sink, crib, table and chairs, babies, clothes, dishes, etc. The children used pencils and paper to make grocery lists and leave notes to each other. They were able to read little books about family members and had extensive opportunities to further develop their oral language.

During the month of October we will be connecting the dramatic play centre to our readings and discussions about Thanksgiving and harvest time. The centre is changing into a market where children can explore the roles of farmer, cashier and customer. The children will be sorting, counting and weighing play fruit and veggies. The children will be exploring Canadian coins during role play. The children will use props such as: play fruit, baskets, a cash register, coins, wallets, purses, notepads and pencils to extend and develop their play.

Thanksgiving Read Alouds

This week the children will be listening to picture books connected to Thanksgiving. We will be making connections to what our families eat at Thanksgiving time and we will be thinking about what we are thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving!

Investigating colour

This week begins our investigation into colour. We will be studying the primary and secondary colours together. We will be reading favourite picture books based on colour; learning to read colour words; creating colours through different mediums; dancing with different coloured scarves; singing songs about colour; sorting by colour; creating colour patterns and writing about colour.
